Earlier in the year I wrote about how I wanted to get in tune with the tides. I made an iOS home screen widget that let me take in the day’s tides at a glance. It worked - I saw the tide every time I unlocked my phone - and I had a lot of fun making an app that was just for me and my family - an app as a home cooked meal.
I hoped it might be useful for other people, so I put it on the app store.
Since then iOS 16 has come out and now you can have widgets on the lock screen as well as the home screen, so I’ve added a lock screen widget to show the tide there too. It doesn’t show when sunrise, sunset and twilight are - like the home screen widget - but you can see at a glance whether the tide is going in or coming out and roughly how long until high or low tide. Here it is:
I’m chuffed with it - now I know what the tide is doing every time I pick up my phone, without even unlocking it. In fact, because I see it so often I’m now in tune with what the tide is doing without even trying. I’ve achieved what I was hoping to do with version one - a calm, passive awareness of the tide; I’m a little bit more in tune with a natural rhythm.
I haven’t released a version with the lock screen widget yet, because I’m still testing it. If you think it sounds handy and you’d like to help test the app then send me your email address and I’ll send you a link to install it for free and you can have a hand in shaping how the app grows next.
